ICCN joint statement
Ten years on from the Paris Agreement, the International Climate Councils Network (ICCN) has released a joint statement affirming the critical role that climate councils play in driving forward the implementation agenda.
Key messages
The world is not where it needs to be on climate. Strengthening governance will be critical for effective climate policy implementation.
Climate councils advise governments on the design, implementation and evaluation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and other forms of climate targets. Councils provide evidence-based advice to governments, opening up political space for innovative climate policy solutions.
Climate councils increase accountability by publishing rigorous analysis and progress reports regularly and transparently.
Demand for stronger climate governance is growing: the ICCN reached 28 members this year, welcoming Brazil, Vanuatu, and Malta as Full members and Maryland (USA) and New South Wales (Australia) as Associate members.
