Increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change have left nearly half of the world’s population vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Many climate councils have a role in supporting their country and communities to adapt to climate change, including through adaptation planning, implementation, investment advice, or progress monitoring. Acting on adaptation now can hold benefits for the future, with the Canadian Climate Institute finding that for every $1 spent on adaptation measures today, $13-$15 will be returned in the years ahead in direct and indirect benefits.
